Christmas is often a time when we meet up with family and celebrate, give each other presents and have lots for Christmas lunch or dinner.
All of this also means that there is a significant amount of stress entangled and is often a time for increased arguments and tension in relationships.
What to do during Christmas family gatherings:
• appreciate the time together
• focus on and celebrate each others positive points
• leave unresolved family issues to be dealt with after Christmas
• eat reasonably and refrain from stuffing yourself
• affirm the things that turned out well and acknowledge them
What to do when emotions run high:
• shift focus to something pleasant
• tell the family member that you don't want to solve long-standing issues right now
• excuse yourself if you see no other options
• discuss conflicting thoughts and emotions with someone afterwards, be it your partner, friend or a professional counsellor/coach
Remember that it is normal that stress is higher in times like Christmas.
